Dr. Johnny Hunt, born July 17, 1952 is an evangelical Christian pastor, author and President of the Southern Baptist Convention form 2008-2010. He is currently the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Woodstock, in Woodstock Georgia.
He was born in Lumberton, North Carolina and is a member of the Lumbee Native American Indian tribe based in North Carolina.
Dr. Hunt graduated from Gardner-Webb College, Boiling Springs, North Carolina in 1979 with a BA Degree-Religion. He was also voted Ministerial Student of the Year in 1979. He earned his Master of Divinity Degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina in 1981. Dr. Hunt received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Immanuel Baptist Theological Seminary of Sharpsburg, Georgia, and also Doctor of Sacred Laws and Letters from Covington Theological Seminary. He also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity at Tennessee Temple University.
The Johnny Hunt Chair of Biblical Preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary was named in Dr. Hunt’s honor on March 11, 1997.
Dr. Hunt has led the Timothy + Barnabas Pastors and Wives Retreat for 23 years. The Lord has opened the doors for pastors and wives to receive instruction and encouragement in 29 nations around the world.
Dr. Hunt has held ministry positions at Lavonia Baptist Church, Mooresboro North Carolina, Falls Baptist Church in Wake Forest, North Carolina, Longleaf Baptist Church in Wilmington, North Carolina and has served at First Baptist Church Woodstock since 1986.
He is married to Janet Allen Hunt of Wilmington, North Carolina. They have two daughters: Deanna Hunt Carswell and Hollie Hunt Hixson. They also have three granddaughters: Katie Hunter Carswell, Hope Hixson, Addie Hixson and one grandson, Carson John Carswell.
